What is Snehana ?

It means Oleation therapy. The dosha and other impurities, which are stuck to the srotas, that is in the pores of cellular walls and capillaries or in other parts of the body, are not easily movable from the adherent tissue surface. Therefore, to start the elimination process, it is essential to give sneha in the body, which lubricates it and removes the dosha.

The oil is also applied on the body externally in this treatment.

External Snehana

  • Lepa – Paste application
  • Murdha taila – Keeping a swab, dipped in medicated oil or ghee over the head or forehead.
  • Abyanga – Massage
  • Udwarthana – Rubbing of powdered herbs
  • Akshitharpana – Akshi means eyes, tharpana means nutrition. This is a process in which herbal medicated ghee is poured over the eyes. This process improves the sight, gives strength to the orbicularis muscles and opric nerve, and removes pain and roughness around eyes. It is highly beneficial in lack of lachrymal secretions, glaucoma, ulcerated cornea, inflammation in the eyes, and darkness around the eyes.

Abyanga - Massage

• Shirsha Abyanga – Head massage

It is useful in hair problems, baldness, falling premature greying of hair etc. specially the head massage prevents and cures headache. It promotes vision and attain a good sleep.

• Pada Abyanga – Foot massage

Prevents fatigue syndrome, promotes eyesight and promotes proper auditory functioning.

• Wakthra Abyanga – Face massage

It promotes complexion of the face.

• Sharira Abyanga – Body massage

• Samvahana – Gentle pressing

• Gandusha

There are two main Ayurvedic gargling procedures.

    1. Kavalagraha – a fluid is retained in the mouth for gargling purpose.
    2. Gandusha – the mouth is filled with fluid impossible. It simulates and soothes the sense organs, freshness the breath and invigorates the mind. It removes oral cavity diseases like glossaries, gingivitis, pharyngitis etc.

• Parishkea – Sawangadara

Pouring of oil or decoctions over the body.

• Karnapurna - Pouring oil drops in ears.

• Pichu – Oil or ghee swab application.

Pichu (Placing of soaked linenor cotton) is a process in which a piece of cloth or linen is soaked in the medicated oil and placed in the desired position over the body or in the body parts according to the site of the treatment. Pichu is an ideal treatment for alopecia, cackes of the skin and scalp, local inflammation, stiffness of the eyes, epistaxis, earache, tinnitus, headache, hemorrhoids, sentinel piles, some pathological condition of vagina, cervical erosions and some types of infertility.

• Shirodara

Pouring oil over the head. It means flow and is considered as a body purifying and dosha – balancing technique. It helps to open the channels of the body and mind to facilitate the treatment of diseases. This treatment directly affects the central nervous system and profoundly relaxes the mind. This treatment is the ideal treatment plan for relieving mental stress and related problems. Also used in diseases of the ear, nose and throat, nervous system, paralysis, loss of speech, loss of memory, insomnia, depression and sleepless problems.

• Svedana

Svedana means fomentation or heating therapy. After Snehana (oil application), it is very effective to open the mouth or srotas of cellular membranes, which allow the impurities to come out, obstructed material is liquefied by heating and mobilisht to come in the Koshtha. Usually in all vata and kappa diseases, swedana is done as its qualities are opposite to those of both the doshas. Which produce sweat, are called sweda and the procedure is called svedana.
